Hab mir ein bisschen mehr Drama erhofft, auch wenn ich stellenweise Gänsehaut hatte. Aber hat nix zu sagen, die bekomm ich schnell ;) Will ja hier nix vorweg nehmen. Lockere Lektüre, schnell durch, flüssiger Schreibstil und nie wirklich langweilig. Dennoch mutet es immer ein wenig kitschig an, wenn Tiere "erzählen", die Meinung konnte mir auch dieses Buch nicht nehmen. Kann man aber mal gelesen haben. Was andere so gut finden, finde ich eher merkwürdig und verwirrend... Nämlich dass das Pferd Joey zwar selbst erzählt, und auch über seine Artgenossen, die Tiere untereinander aber scheinbar nicht wissen, wie sich das andere fühlt, sondern das nur am Blick sehen und vermuten können... Irgendwie doch komisch.

hab dieses buch gekauft weil ich eine unterhaltung über den film bei fb gelesen hatte, bereue es nicht. hab es das erste mal in der arbeit durch gelesen und musste heulen ich saß wirklich vor allen leuten und hab geheult warum?? na lest es doch selbst.beim 2ten mal habe ich es jeden abend 5 tage laut meiner ungeborenen tochter vorgelesen das war sicher nicht das letzte mal das sie es gehört hat und wer weiß vielleicht ließt sie es irgendwann alleine für sich.mit tollen filmbildern. bin am überlegen ob ich mir 2 davon als poster machen lasse und in das kinderzimmer hänge oder sogar in mein schlafzimmer:D

Gefährten ist wirklich ein super schönes Buch auch für Erwachsene. Ich bin 23 und habe das Buch verschlungen. Habe es gelesen bevor ich den Film im Kino angesehen habe. Wie (fast) immer ist das Buch besser.Die Story ist wirklich schön und das Buch ist wirklich ergreifend. Ich konnte es kaum aus der Hand legen. Unbedingt lesen!

Ich habe mir das Buch gekauft, nachdem ich die Hollywood-Verfilmung gesehen hatte und war skeptisch, welche Version (Film oder Buch) nun besser die Geschichte erzählt. Das Buch lässt sich wunderbar lesen, man findet sofort einen roten Faden und möchte es gar nicht mehr aus der Hand geben. Ich kann es nur jedem empfehlen, der nicht zwangsläufig ein Pferdefan sein muss, sondern der gern liest und auch mal einen Roman auf eine andere Art (aus der Sicht eines Pferdes) erzählt bekommen möchte.

Das Buch ist sehr gut geschrieben und mitfühlend. Es erzählt die Geschichte vom Film in abgewandelter Form. Es ist sehr spannend geschrieben und die Kapitel ind gut gesetzt. Nur was mich stört, es ist viel zu kurz. Ich als Vielleserin bin mit dem Buch in paar Tagen durch gewesen. Das entäuscht schon sehr. Aber an sich ist es ein sehr gutes Buch.

ein zu herzen gehendes buch, einfach grandios erzählt aus der sicht des pferdes. so tiefgründig, erschütternd und fesselnd, man zittert mit den akteuren, staunt über reaktionen und aktionen der soldaten und kann hautnah den schrecken des krieges miterleben. sehr zu empfehlen.

brilliant reading. opens your heart, eyes and mind to the horrors of war and the beauty of life. shows how both sides suffered and were human and above all the tremendoys sacrifice made by the animals.

Habe zuerst den Film gesehen und musste daher die Zusammenhänge mit dem Buch herausfiltern. Aber im großen und ganzen ist das Buch für jeden zu empfehlen der Pferde mag, sich ein wenig für Geschichte und Freundschaft interessiert

Very nice book, although it starts to show its age. Needs to be updated with the current crop of the open source frameworks and free tools.

Are you an unabashed cheapskate developer? Perhaps by the necessity of a limited budget. Or maybe you consider Open Source to be ultimately more reliable than closed proprietary code. For either reason, or better, for both, this book might interest you.The authors shamelessly plug the combination of writing in Java and using Open Source applications that have arisen to support it. Starting with using Ant as a "super-make". Then testing modularity and programmatically with JUnit. If you need to build business rules, why not try Marc Fleury's JBoss? Plus front end UIs can be enhanced with SWT, if you want a native look and feel, instead of the default Swing/AWT. Also discussed are JMX, JDBC, JNDI and more.All these packages are free and by now are very well tested. Sam-Bodden and Judd try to motivate you with concrete code samples. Because the packages can be forbidding in their totality. The authors show how you can integrate them into your needs in a systematic and doable fashion. The complexity can be minimised.As an extra fillip, they devote a chapter to the very hot topic of having Web Services support mobile clients, via something like J2ME.

Why I like this book:- It gives a good overall coverage of the open source options that aids decision making.- Something like this was well overdue.- Reasonably well written, they know their stuff.- Good pointers and relevant advicxe.Why I don't like this book.- As usual, the code does not work, ant generates warnings, some pages on the web application do not work, no install instructions, had to figure it out for 2 hours. No source files for the argoUML provided.- SPELLING AND GRAMMAR ERRORS. If you can't stand them, like me, you will writhe in pain at some real shockers.- The example application is TOO COMPLEX. If you provide an example system, MAKE IT WORK FIRST AND PROVIDE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS PLEASE.- The website is "under construction", therefore no errata, had to go to the publisher's site for the source code.- An online version of the example app would have been a good idea.- I will probably only read it once and never refer to it again because of these issues, so kinda wasted it's potential.- I contacted the authors and got the usual "not my problem" response.I hope this helps you make a sound purchase decision, and just maybe it would have got 4 stars if the external issues such as cource code building, website, errata etc were addressed. Attention authors: it's not too late to address them. Unfortunately I do have that bad just-bought-an-expensive-java-book-again-and-feel-let-down-just-publish-it-and-forget-it kinda feeling.

I looked at the size of the book and didn't think it was possible for the authors to adequately cover all java open source technologies listed on the cover. I was mistaken. Since I am a seasoned J2EE professional, I thought I could skip over sections on Ant, Junit and UML. Again, I was mistaken. I learned many tips on topics I thought I was already an expert on.Not only did the authors provide valuable information on each topic, but each technology was compared in an unbiased fashion. I felt each chapter provided enough background and detailed information for me to decide if it's a good fit for my application. The authors point out critical questions to ponder in each chapter when making architectural decisions. The chapter on "Data Storage Options" is a great example.I found the theme of using the sample application throughout the book as a cohesive and a good way to demonstrate and contrast the different open source technologies. The sample application represented a real world scenario and demonstrated more than just the simple (and non real world) usage of the technologies.I only have one wish, I would have liked to seen a little more coverage of Apache Axis in the web services chapter.It would be impossible to thoroughly cover each open source technology included in the book since each one is a book unto itself. However, after reading this single book I feel educated enough to choose and further evaluate open source technologies that will meet my specific application needs. This sure beats having to research countless web sites, articles and technology specific books to find information provided in this one resource.

I must confess that the title is what first intrigued me. I like "process" oriented books, that tell me how to do more with less. But when I cracked it open, I found a very broad collection of quality open source projects, all available for free.Rather than just listing the products and letting me fend for myself, the authors walk me through what to expect from an MVC or persistence framework, laying out the landscape and telling me what the tradeoffs are for each solution. It's a great idea. With a little promotion, a book with this title, philosophy, and organization *should* go places. I'm not sure why it hasn't so far.

I didn't know this book existed until I read "Far North" by Will Hobbs. It's a kids' book about two teenagers and an old Nahanni Indian who get stranded in Deadmen's Valley after their plane crashes in the winter. The author mentioned that he fell in love with the Nahanni River area after reading R. M. Patterson's account of it--"The Dangerous River." Of course, I had to read the original, so I have now read it, and it was interesting seeing how Mr. Hobbs took lots of events in his fictional story out of Mr. Patterson's adventures. Mr. Patterson even mentions that he got the idea to go see the Nahanni region after reading an even earlier book. Maybe I'll have to check it out too.This isn't one of those books that I could sit down and read straight through. It's not a novel, but it does give background information about an unspoiled paradise in the far north--some of the few areas that remain unspoiled by human civilization. I liked the pictures of the area. When I try reading about it on the internet, there aren't that many sources of information. This book is probably the best.

I first read this book when I was 15, just before dropping out of school and thumbing to Alaska. I'd read many books by old explorers and trappers before taking off. This was one of the best. Have just reread it 50 years later. Kept me up all night. Thinking of taking off agsin....

One of the best books about long gone days when men were men and adventures were epic. Canoeing up an unexplored river In an unexplored wilderness; building a cabin and trapping through the winter; bone chilling cold, floods, fires and a land rich with game. A dream that can't be fulfilled in our day.

Patterson lived along the Nahanni when the area was still wild and relatively unraveled. His descriptions of life at that time are excellent and provide us with a source of history that would otherwise be forgotten. This book is well worth reading to get both an idea of life in the Canadian north between 1927 and 1929. The book provides a good historical reference for the Nahanni and would be a good source of background information for anybody contemplating canoeing the river.

I was inspired by the scenery, the risks, the challenges, the weather, the independent attitude of Paterson. Traveling in his footsteps is on my bucket list.
